Blog #10

 To revise my proposal draft I will add in my citations to my paper. I will also try to meet the word count requirements needed. Right now I am sitting at about 1,200 words and I need to have at least 2,000 words. To be able to have the 2,00 word count I will add in my citations and add in a couple more examples and facts that have to go in with my proposal to make my point o why Food Allergen classes should be taken and why it would decrease the number of allergic reactions. I will also be adding and deleting some comments that my peers have made aware that could be changed and what could make my proposal stronger.

Argument of Fact

In my argument of fact research paper, I would like to make a point to everyone how serious it is for all restaurants to be aware that not all food allergies are the same. Some can be severe to their health and some may no be, but all restaurants should have a sign or something pin pointing out that there may be a trace of a specific food in each of their dishes that they prepare. Not everyone is allergic to the same thing, but having a description of what each food comes with would greatly help out the customer in making sure that they do not have something in their plate that does not need to be put in their food. This seems like a great idea for people with a food allergy.

What my resources taught me

My resources have taught me that not everyone gets tested for a food allergy. Sometimes they don't find out until their first allergic reaction. In most restaurants, they do not aware you that their will be a trace of a certain food in your dish. Also in my resources. I learn that at most times children that have a food allergy sometimes have the gene passed down to them by their parents. At times, there is a parent in that has the same allergy and then the end up passing it down to their child. It could also be cause by a history of the same food allergy down the family line as well. In some school district, cafeteria and nurses office are making it aware that children in their school have a food allergy and should make aware to the cafeteria staff what child has what food allergy and should make it their best to their ability to have something for the child that has a food allergy. Cafeteria staff are also taking into consideration that they should be well trained in trying to decrease the number of food being crossed over. If a utensil is being used to serve a specific food, then it should be used for that dish and that dish only. For example, if they are preparing fruit cocktails for dessert, then it should be used for the fruit and not for something like apple sauce or chocolate pudding.

Finding Resources

In finding my resources for my topic, I used the University library link. When trying to find what I was looking for took a while. Most of the articles were not interesting to me. I wanted somthing that would have an overview of food allergies in children, but the only thing I could find was over seasonal allergies. It took some time to dig in and find information on my topic that wouldn't make my essay sound boring in non-interesting to my audience. When searching for articles the first search word I used was "allergies". When all the articles started to pull up, nothing was for food allergies. I was mainly asthmatic allergies and seasonal allergies in children. So I decided to try "Food Allergies in Children". I found some articles, but they were mainly talking about how some children eventually as they get older grow out of their allergy. It doesn't always stick with you your whole like. There weren't many articles that I was looking for in my topic. They were mainly in seasonal allergies that everyone on has during harvest seasons. I asked my tutor if she could help me with trying to find some articles that covered my topic. She also struggled a little trying to find articles over food allergies, but as we started to narrow down on what exactly we were looking for, there were more that 200 articles that we could choose from covering food allergies and how severe they are. I am allergic to peanuts and what I learned from my topic is that your parents do not have to have a history of a food allergy. Sometimes they just come up out of the blue. Neither one of my parents have a food allergy, the only ones in my family that have a history of a allergy are my siblings and I. My 16 year old brother is allergic to the seeds on strawberries and is allergic to soy. My 15 year old sister is
severely allergic to penicillin. My youngest brother has a history of asthma and hasn't been diagnosed with a food allergy. As for me, I have asthma and I am allergic to peanuts. We have traced down our family history, and no one in my family has a allergy history. For some reason it started with my mothers children?

Food Allergies



Food allergies are an obstacle that many children face today. When I was ten years old I found out that I was allergic to peanuts. Having to adjust to this food allergy is life changing for a ten year old. Going out to restaurants is always a challenge, because you always have to ask if there is any trace of peanuts in the meal that you are ordering. You always have to trust someone that you do not know to prepare your food in a way that you wouldn't have a reaction. A few weeks ago I had an allergic reaction due to a Dairy Queens employee's inattention to detail. I asked her to clean off mixer so there wouldn't be any trace of peanuts in banana milkshake. Due to her laziness, she did not clean the machine properly and there were traces of peanuts inside my shake. I had an allergic reaction and had to immediately had to take a Benadryl to control the reaction.   I think that restaurants should be more accommodating to children with these types of allergies.  It is hard enough to be a ten year old and have to ask questions like, "Will there be any traces of peanuts in my meal?"   Families are also affected by a child's allergic reaction because of the inconvenience of leaving before they are even finished with their meal.  If the restaurant would have alternatives for children with peanut or other food allergies, this inconvenience could be eliminated. Restaurants should understand that these allergies are potentially life threatening and should do what they can to make sure the proper procedures are being followed.
